Making HR Accessible • Strategic • Inclusive

Employee Appreciation Day on 6th March is often marked with a quick thank you, a team lunch or a small gesture. While these moments matter, in HR terms appreciation is far more than a one-day event. It is a retention strategy.

Consistent, meaningful recognition directly impacts engagement, discretionary effort and staff turnover. People rarely leave solely because of workload; they leave when their contribution feels unseen or undervalued. A single day of appreciation cannot fix a weak culture, but it can expose whether recognition is embedded or simply occasional.

Effective appreciation is specific and commercially aligned. Vague praise feels pleasant but forgettable. Clear recognition that links effort to impact reinforces the behaviours you want repeated. It must also be inclusive. High performers are not always the loudest voices, and quieter contributors, operational staff and neurodivergent employees are often overlooked. Fair recognition focuses on value and outcomes, not personality style.

Appreciation should also connect to development. Praise without progression quickly feels hollow. If recognition is not reflected in growth opportunities, pay conversations or stretch assignments, it risks becoming performative.

Employee Appreciation Day is a useful audit point. Are managers equipped to recognise contribution consistently? Is appreciation equitable across teams? Does your people strategy reinforce your thank you?

Strong HR practice understands that appreciation is not soft. It protects culture, strengthens performance and reduces recruitment risk.

On 6th March, say thank you. But go further. Build systems where recognition is structured, inclusive and aligned to business goals.

If you need support identifying gaps in recognition or ensuring neurodivergent employees are properly supported during high-pressure periods, we at DominionHR work with HR teams to strengthen inclusive, commercially grounded people practices.
